Haitian filmmaker Gessica Généus is the new president of the OIF film commission

Gessica Généus, a Haitian icon of the seventh art, has been appointed president of the Cinema-Fiction Commission of the Image Fund of La Francophonie.  She succeeds Alexandre Michelin who took over from Rithy Panh in 2020.

Gessica Généus is a woman with many strings to her bow. In addition to her many achievements in the film industry, she is a singer and writer. She will be the president of the Cinéma-fiction commission of the Fonds Image de la Francophonie until 2023.

Gessica Généus was born in Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti. As an actress, she played her first role in the critically acclaimed feature film Barikad by Richard Sénécal, and in addition to her studies in her country, she attended Acting International in Paris on a scholarship obtained in 2010.

Unable to bear clichéd and secondary roles anymore, she returned to Haiti, and founded Ayizan, her production company. In 2016 she published her first novel “Yon ti koze ak sè m”.

With Ayizan production, she has produced several documentaries including “Vizaj nou” representations of contemporary Haitian characters, then “Douvan jou ka leve”.

Her label, Ayizan Production then launched into feature films. “Freda” is the latest successful film of the producer. A film that marked the year 2021 and continues to make its way. Recently, it was nominated for the Oscars 2022.
